Obituary in the Coffeyville
Daily Journal dated Monday November 2, 1936:
RACHEL ANN BRYANT, PAST 93, SUCCUMBS. Funeral services conducted this afternoon
for aged resident, who died Saturday. Mrs. Rachel Ann Bryant, a resident of Coffeyville and vicinity for thirty-five years,
died at 3:10 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the home of a son, John W. Wilson, 512 West Tenth Street, following a three weeks' illness.
She was aged 93 years, 9 months and 3 days.
Funeral services were
conducted at the skinner funeral home at 2 o'clock this afternoon by the Rev. Austin
Smith, pastor f the First Christian Church, and burial was in Elmwood cemetery.
Mrs. Bryant's death marked
the separation of one of the oldest pairs of twins in the United States. She and her sister, Mrs. Winifred
Stevens of Pilot Point, Texas would have celebrated their 94th
birthday anniversary next Jan. 28. The twins were the youngest children of Mr.
and Mrs. John Haskins. Each married during the second year of the Civil war. A
few years later their husbands died. In 1870 Winifred remarried and four years
later Rachel became Mrs. Bryant. The sisters' mother was a first cousin of William
Jennings Bryan.
Mrs. Bryant was born in Jasper County, Mo. She was the widow of Joseph M.
Bryant, who died here a few years ago. Survivors include the son, at whose home
she passed away, and five other children, Mrs. J.H. Bartmess
of Talala, Okla., R.A. Bryant of R.F.D. 1, Wann, Okla., Mrs. E.A. Martin of R.F.D.4, Coffeyville, H.B.
Bryant of R.F.D. 4, Coffeyville, and Mrs. A.B. Allgood,
R.F.D. 1, Independence; and her twin sister, Mrs. Stevens.
